Puppy Training and Socialization – How important is puppy training?

Bravo Starting Puppy TrainingI just received confirmation of another puppy beginning our Puppy Head Start program this weekend.  This is Bravo, an 11 week old German Shepherd.

Penny’s owners (the Lab mix pictured below) signed her up earlier this week!  I love this!  No, it is probably not for the reason you think.  Well, maybe for a little of the reason you think, I do have to eat.

The main reason I love puppy training and socialization: I KNOW this puppy will NOT end up in a shelter or living a tortured life of fear and/or separation anxiety!

At LowCountry Dog Trainers we train adult dogs that are suffering from fear and anxiety every week.  It is a long and hard struggle to ‘fix’ these problems.  We pledge to do everything in our power to prevent these pups from getting into this shape before it begins!

Also, a very sad statistic is that 80% of the dogs born in the United States do not make it to their first birthday.  They are sent to the shelter for bad behavior. There are numerous reasons dogs end up in shelters from lack of house training, to jumping, nipping, and chewing. In other words, just overall unacceptable behavior.  It amazes me that most of these problems can be dealt with before a puppy turns 6 months old, however, these dogs are still ending up in shelters.

Don’t get me wrong, there are also a number of owners that stick it out.  They will not give up on their dog. However, the dog will live its entire life with a number of problems from fear biting and aggression to separation anxiety.  With proper training and puppy socialization most of these problems can be prevented.

The solution: A Puppy Training Program that Includes Puppy Socialization Education

Puppy Socialization and Training, PennyThere is a 4 to 5 month period after a puppy turns 3 months old that shapes his/her behavior for the rest of his/her life. It is crucial that you do just about everything right, and the sad fact is, most people don’t.

Our Puppy Head Start puppy training program was designed for this very reason.  We do not want to see good dogs end up in shelters! Using reward-based training, we help mold your puppy’s behaviors while learning basic commands, building confidence and socializing.  We provide information and advice on reinforcing good behavior, house-breaking and crate training.  Behaviors that have to be learned during the next couple of months, if you want a well balanced dog!  Remember, you are not raising a puppy, you are raising a dog.  The puppy stage lasts between 12 to 20 months, then you have a dog for the rest of her life!  We also answer any questions you have about your puppy and her training and provide continuing support after the class.

Whether you choose our training or someone else’s puppy training, please find a knowledgeable trainer.  I am a firm believer that it is an owner’s responsibility to keep their dogs both physically and mentally active for the rest of their lives.  Please take the time and train and socialize your puppy now.
